An excerpt from Chapter 1 of the guidebook, “Making Together Work: Support for Coalition Advocacy Learning and Engagement in Good Governance”

Tiwala is the Filipino word for trust, which is the basis for strong coalitions. Carino (2007) explains that although tiwala entails a certain amount of trust, it should not mean that an individual will be oblivious towards events and circumstances around them. Having a sense of caution, while maintaining trust, helps individuals build a more lasting relationship. Bohnet and Meier (2006) argue that “it’s better to build trust over time…An excess of trust in the early stages of negotiation can sour a relationship from the start.” Building trust over time allows members of the coalition to be more open and giving, creates a good foundation for shared understanding, and reduces unnecessary escalation in conflicts. When a community trusts each other, it is easier for members to navigate negotiations and more comfortable for them to commit resources and efforts towards their common goals.
